Garlic and other sulfur vegetables may have anti-cancer properties


Famed actress Sophia Loren attributes her health and lifelong beauty to a simple Mediterranean diet that includes good quality pasta as well as allium vegetables such as garlic and onions. Moreover, studies have shown that the sulfur compound present in allium vegetables may offer protection against certain forms of cancer.

A peer review study that was published in Environmental Health Perspectives in Sep. 2001 under the title of “Allium Vegetables and Organosulfur Compounds: Do They Help Prevent Cancer?” contained this encouraging assessment:

Allium vegetables have been shown to have beneficial effects against several diseases, including cancer. Garlic, onions, leeks, and chives have been reported to protect against stomach and colorectal cancers, although evidence for a protective effect against cancer at other sites, including the breast, is still insufficient. The protective effect appears to be related to the presence of organosulfur compounds and mainly allyl derivatives.

Jonathan Landsman, host for NaturalHealth365.com, offers further support for the carcinogenic-fighting properties of garlic and other allium vegetables in his 2014 report entitled, “Sulfur deficiency triggers cancer epidemic.”

Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute (now Max Planck Institute) for cell physiology at Berlin, Dr. Otto Warburg was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1931 for his in-depth research into the metabolism of tumors and the respiration of cells, particularly cancer cells. Dr. Warburg discovered that healthy body cells meet their energy needs by respirating oxygen, while cancer cells meet most of their energy needs by fermenting sugars. In his work entitled, “The Metabolism of Tumors,” Dr. Warburg determined that all forms of cancer are characterized by two basic conditions: acidosis and hypoxia (lack of oxygen).

Final Comments

One of the most abundant minerals in our body, sulfur makes up about 140 grams (approx. 5 oz) in an average person.

Sulfur is vitally important for a number of essential physiological processes. For instance, sulfur is needed to synthesize taurine and the master antioxidant known as glutathione. Sulfur also binds the chain of amino acids that form insulin.

Sulfur-rich vegetables not only include garlic and other alliums, they also encompass the brassica family, such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.

A clinical professor of medicine named Terry Wahls, MD, is renown for recovering from secondary progressive multiple sclerosis through diet and a lifestyle program.
